Two years ago at the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, perhaps the biggest race in the history of auto racing, a then 24-year-old man from California almost immediately became a legend. Practically overnight, Alexander Rossi became one of the sport’s most recognizable drivers, opening up plenty of unique opportunities – one of which came late last year, when he was approached by CBS.
Rossi, along with fellow driver Conor Daly, was selected to be on The Amazing Race, a reality game show that is essentially a race around the world for the chance of winning $1 million though, as Rossi admits, the pair might not have been the first choice by CBS’ casting company. The duo, nicknamed Team IndyCar, had an impressive result in Season 30 of the show, finishing in – spoiler alert – fourth place.
Now, with the experience in his rearview, Rossi has his sights on winning another Indy 500. We recently caught up with the driver of the No. 27 Napa Auto Parts sponsored Honda to discuss his time on The Amazing Race, his thoughts on the new aero kits and his experience with Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Dirtfork: With IndyCar, you’re on television several times throughout the summer but what’s it like to be on each week for something unique like The Amazing Race?
Alexander Rossi: It was different, for sure. I mean, obviously on a race weekend it’s your natural environment, you’re not doing things that are too uncomfortable for you, so it’s very second nature.
